Power of Being a Girl

As the oldest and largest multi-service women’s organization in Canada, YWCA is uniquely equipped to help young women reach their full potential, achieve independence and acquire leadership skills.

YWCA Sudbury is proud to offer a community conference entitled, The Power of Being a Girl to young women in the Sudbury region.  A YWCA National Signature Event, The Power of Being a Girl was first launched in the fall of 2006 and was greeted with incredible success and tremendous enthusiasm. In 2008 we collaborated with both the Rainbow District School Board and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board to reach over 450 girls from nine area schools!

Offered through a peer mentoring model with young women from area high schools supporting the process with their experiences, grade 7 and 8 girls were given the chance to learn first hand from their peers. For most young women, the teenage years represent a difficult and challenging phase.  Issues related to healthy relationships, self esteem, body image, civic engagement and representations of gender in the media are among many discussions addressed in a forum of safety and inclusion.

We learned that given the opportunity to come together, girls and young women can increase their personal and social awareness.  The Power of Being a Girl Conference has helped girls to recognize and build on their strengths and abilities and has further encouraged them to build a community of strong young leaders in their classrooms, schools and communities.

The Sudbury YWCA Women of Distinctions Awards Gala is the key fundraising effort which supports the development and growth of The Power of Being a Girl Conference. It is our hope that with each successful fundraiser our girls conference will reach larger and more diverse groups of young women within our community.

Envisioning New Meanings Project

Envisioning New Meanings of Disability and Difference provides women with disabilities and physical differences the opportunity to represent themselves in their own words and images, as opposed to being represented by others.

Envisioning means to see something in a new, more creative way.  In a series of workshops, we use photography, digital storytelling and drama as a way to explore ideas about ourselves – how we want to be seen, and what is important to us.

This program is developed by, and for, women with disabilities and physical differences (for example, a facial difference, burn scar or mastectomy).  This is a partnership project of:

  • YWCA of Peterborough, Victoria and Haliburton
  • YWCA of Sudbury
  • Women with Disabilities and Deaf Women’s Program at Springtide Resources
  • Women’s College Research Institute at Women’s College Hospital
  • Women’s Studies Program at Trent University

Charity Cars Giveaway

YWCA Sudbury  has partnered with Maslack Supply and 17 local Auto Value Certified Centres in Sudbury, Blind River and Elliot Lake to put forward “Fueling Safety and Independence”, the biggest charity car giveaway ever offered in Northern Ontario.

Qualifying women who have experienced intimate partner abuse and have transitioned away from violence will be the happy recipients.  Agency representatives will be on hand at the grand award ceremony to accept the vehicles on behalf of the recipients who wish to remain anonymous.  Though the transition to living a life free from abuse is challenging and often isolating, having a reliable vehicle helps some women job search, get to and from work, access child care, medical appointments, community supports and develop greater independence.

The actual giveaway date has been set for Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. and will be held on the grounds of Maslack Supply on Falconbridge Road in Sudbury.  This family-oriented celebration will bring many of us from the community together, united in raising awareness and celebrating women’s successes. For further information, please contact Joline Gaudette at (705) 673-4754 ext. 224.
